STA celebrated our students at an awards assembly the last week of the 2010-'11 school year. Achievements recognized included our Spelling Bee and Geography Bee Champions. STA students also placed in school, district, and national level rankings in The Continental Mathematics League and The Catholic Mathematics League, two nationwide competitions designed to motivate students in math and improve problem solving strategies. Again, our students performed exceptionally well, with STA’s 2nd grade placing first in an eleven state Regional Division.
Students were also recognized for their participation in Visioneering, a program developed by SMU’s Lyle School of Engineering specifically for middle school students to foster excitement for and interest in careers in the fields of math and science. Our 7th grade participated in the Annual Stock Market game, sponsored by Merrill Lynch. Each team was given $100,000 to invest. Over a several week period they researched companies and made informed decisions about which stocks to buy or sell. Mr. Laffiteau’s 7th grade honors math class placed first among all schools and school districts, public and private, in the North East Texas Region.
Students were also recognized for their reading achievements. Eleven students read all 20 Texas Bluebonnet nominee books and over 150 students read between 1,000,000 and 4,600,000 words this school year! We are extremely proud of their efforts, dedication, and willingness to take on challenges.
